Undoubtedly an experienced vascular consultant surgeon. We are the only individuals with the full range of experience in all the various techniques for vein treatment. We are also the only doctors that treat veins in the NHS. 

There are many people who offer some of the services and may even be adequate at  one technique but no other doctor or nurse practitioner has the range and training of a Vascular Consultant.  So think, if you are picking a venue for your 20th birthday party would you pick Burger King or the Liver Building.

In my opinion the first thing to do is research the surgeon and try and speak to previous patients or more usefully staff team members that work with them, day in and day out. It is useful to get a true informed assessment about their ability and individual style before you see them. Then visit the surgeon in their clinic and assess if a good rapport is present and if you trust their judgement. Surgery is like a once in a lifetime journey, in unfamiliar terrain - you really want the best guide available.

I pride myself on my rapport with my patients. Part of this stems from having had surgery myself after having experienced a post skiing knee injury over a decade ago. Interestingly I chose to pay to go private more to control who I saw, when I saw them  and also to be able to chose the time of surgery. I also thoroughly researched who the hospital staff recommended (in three hospitals)  as the best and safest surgeon (with the lowest complication rate) to engage and hence have had an excellent result.
